The Fulfilment of Aims
Teaching and Learning
- The staff at the Ilford Ursuline Preparatory School provide constant example of their commitment to the Catholic ethos through their relationships with one another as a staff and their relationships with the children.
- The school provides opportunities for the children to develop a sense of awe, wonder and mystery about the world and creation, by enabling children to focus and discuss this e.g. through drama, story, art, music, meditation and prayer.
- The children are constantly made aware of their worth, uniqueness, gifts and talents along with a sense of the worth of others, through displays of work, sharing news and distribution of certificates in class and school assemblies.
- The R.E. programme followed will be 'Here I Am.' This will be taught in conjunction wih the Curriculum Directory.
- The teaching of R.E. will take 10 per cent of the curriculum time weekly. In KS1 2 hours 25 minutes weekly and in KS2 2 hours 30 minutes weekly.
- The R.E. programme of Study will be fully resourced. Materials will be class Based and will be wide ranging including artefacts, posters, prayer books and bibles. Resource material will be available in the Prayer Area.
- The teaching of prayers will form part of the R.E. Programme of Study and within each year specific prayers will be taught and their knowledge assessed.
- The children will be assisted towards a familiarity with the Mass and through consideration of aspects of the Mass as highlighted per class in R.E. Programme of Study.
Prayer and Worship
- The staff ensures that the children feel able to express their relationship with God through prayer and worship. In order to achieve this, children will participate in class based prayer at key times throughout the day and regular school based celebration.
- The whole school participates in two weekly assemblies, one of which will be teacher led and will involve collective worship and celebration of pupil achievement. The other will be a class led assembly, prepared on a rota basis, which will draw on children's learning and involve an element of collective worship. When there is no assembly the whole school will meet at the end of the day for a short act of worship. Different classes, on a rota basis, will prepare prayers.
- The events of the Holy Week will be commemorated annually.
- The Mass will be celebrated in school on Holy Days of Obligation and on patronal feast days. There will also be a Leavers' Mass at the end of the academic year. The children in KS2 prepare Masses on a rota basis. Pupils in KS1 will work with KS2 classes to prepare specific Masses towards the end of the school year. KS1 will focus on the particular liturgical area specified for their class in the scheme of work.
- Christmas celebrations will take the form of a Nativity play in KS1 and a Carol Service in KS2.
- The religious life of the school will be enriched by the use of music, which will play an integral part in Masses, assemblies and celebrations.
- Staff will meet at 8.40 a.m. for a daily act of worship.
- Art will be used widely to support the religious life of the school. An Easter garden will be created annually as a focus for meditation. A Nativity scene will be set in the Prayer Area during Advent.
- A Prayer Area, created by staff, will be constantly in use in St Angela's building.
