Maths
Mathematics is a key skill which encompasses a wide range of cognitive activity.
This range involves the child in:-
- recognising pattern
- interpreting signs and symbols
- performing operations and following a process
- understanding and ordering number
- developing and transcribing thoughts
Mathematics is essential to the developing teachnological society that we find ourselves living in.
Aims and Objectives
We believe the aim of mathematics should be to:-
- provide the children with an understanding of mathematics in everyday life and to enable them to apply their mathematical knowledge
- help to make sense of the world and solving practical problems
- communicate with the mathematical language of signs and symbols
- enable the children to acquire knowledge of the basic facts and skills to apply them to solve familiar and unfamiliar problems e.g. using their tables and a variety of mathematical operations
- teach the children to express their ideas clearly in mathematics
- sustain the children's interest and encourage them to regard mathematics as an enjoyable subject
- enable the children to select the appropriate equipment for pratical activities
- encourage all children to be confident and competent in the use of computers in mathematics and other areas of the curriculum
- make all children numerate and creative, particularly in their approach to problem solving
- encourage all children to fulfil their potential in mathematics and thus gain confidence
- enable all children to use mathematical reasoning, thinking and language
- enable the children to discuss their workings out
- gain a facility in mental maths
