History
AIMS
The History curriculum aims to stimulate an interest in and an enthusiasm for the study of the past. Within the history curriculum we aim to introduce pupils to what is involved in understanding and interpreting the past. We expect to take account of the role of men, women and different ethnic groups in shaping the past. Through the study of history we aim to help pupils develop a sense of identity through learning about the development of Britain, Europe and the world.
Chronological understanding
Pupils will be given opportunities:
- to place events, people and changes into a chronological framework
- to use historical language related to the passing of time e.g. old/new, modern/ancient, century/decade/B.C./A.D.
- to use terms thata define different periods e.g. Tudor England and terms that describe periods e.g. civil war, morarchy, civilization, invasion.
Knowledge and Understanding of Events, People and Changes in the Past
Pupils will be given opportunities:
- to learn about the experiences of people in the past and why they acted as they did
- to describe and identify reasons for and results of changes in the periods studied
- to identify differences between ways of life at different times
- to develop respect for and tolerance of other people and cultures
Historical Interpretation
Pupils will be given opportunities:
- to investigate different interpretations of the past and form judgements about their reliability
- to distinguish between fact and fiction
Historical Enquiry
Pupils will be given opportunities:
- to use a range of historical sources to find out about aspects of the period studied
- to use ICT to gain access to additional information sources and to assist in handling, classifying and presenting evidence.
Organisation and Communication
Pupils will be given opportunities:
- to communicate their knowledge and understanding of history in a variety of ways including dramatic reenactments, artwork, oral presentation and systematic writing of different kinds
- to develop an awareness of how the past shapes the present through cause and effect.
